Spotlight

From its humble beginnings in the 1970s as a single dress fabric stall at Queen Victoria Market, Spotlight has grown to include 130 sew, craft, party and home decorating superstores, with outlets across four countries.

The unique offering of an extensive product range and knowledgeable staff in a one-stop shopping destination has cultivated a strong and loyal customer base, as evidenced by the strong membership take-up of the VIP Club loyalty program. As one of the most successful and fastest growing retailers in Australasia, Spotlight is able to source products throughout Australia and the rest of the world; which enables them to deliver the exact products customers require, at the best price available.

Customer service has been, and always will be, a priority. Every SRG Team Member undergoes extensive training to ensure they have a thorough knowledge of our products, as well as an ability to provide valuable advice. The ability to offer a diverse range of experiences, a work-life balance, the ability to move within the company, and career opportunities, ensures Spotlight are able to attract great people to the team.

Spotlight is committed to employing local staff at all stores. The process involves the recruitment of Team Members, including Managers. Spotlight leaders are then partnered with the local management teams, building their understanding and knowledge of the business to ensure the launch of each outlet is smooth and successful.

Spotlight New Zealand

The first New Zealand store opened in Wairau Park in January 1996. This opening was a great success with thousands of people filling the car park before the store was due to open. This proved straight away that Spotlight was an innovative new business redefining the market in New Zealand, and that the customers were excited about it!

New Zealanders were hooked on Spotlight and Spotlight was hooked on New Zealand, following this first store, three more stores followed opening in quick succession – Wellington (April 1996), Manakau City (November 1996), and Christchurch (January 1997).

Since then the business has continued to grow in New Zealand, expanding to different locations, increasing staff and offering new categories to customers. In 1997 a Support Group opened in Auckland, to assist the ever expanding store network.

Currently there are 18 Spotlight stores scattered around New Zealand and the business has been cemented as one of the major retailers in the country.

In 2016 Spotlight celebrated 20 years of doing business in New Zealand and is proud to be bigger and better than ever in the NZ market.

Spotlight South East Asia

After much planning and searching for the right location, the first store in Asia, and Spotlight’s first store overseas, opened in Orchard Point, Singapore on the 30th of September 1995. The grand opening featured huge crowds, a giant kangaroo and record sales!

In 2002, Spotlight moved from Orchard Plaza to a newer site at Plaza Singapura and then extended that site in 2004 to ensure that the store could continue to fit the ever expanding ranges. Since that store opened almost 25 years ago, the store has continued to flourish and be successful, with customers enjoying the same huge range of products and the same bargains galore that customers in Australia love so much. Singapore continues to be one of the best performing stores within the business. Proudly, we have been with the same landlord since our grand opening.

The next step into expanding into Asia occurred in 2014, when again after much planning, Spotlight opened the first store in Ampang Point, Malaysia. Opening day was again amazing, with thousands of people queuing throughout the center and up escalators ready to shop the new brand new store.

Following the success of the Asian stores to date, the target is to open many more stores across South East Asia.
